Quantum gases are ensemble of atoms or molecules that cease to behave like classical point particles and start displaying quantum features usually visible only for the much lighter electrons.

I will introduce briefly the physics of ultracold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensation, discuss the main motivation behind the intense research activity that has flourished over more than 20 years, since the Nobel-winning first experiments, and present some specific results with two-components BoseEinstein condensates.

Finally, I will propose to marry quantum gases with nano-technologies, with the aim of obtaining novel hybrid devices, like quantum computers specialized to specific tasks, the so-called quantum emulators. As a first step, I will show how nano-structured surfaces illuminated by laser light are expected to allow atom trapping that overcomes current limitations.
