Quantum field theory and Schwinger pair creation

After a description of quantum field theory as basic framework to describe all elementary particles and forces of nature, phenomenon of pair creation by strong electric fields is described and put in a perspective as a key process which tests our knowledge of microscopic world, including quantum mechanics and relativity.
