Abstract: The recent discovery of 4d quantum field theories with exact interacting UV fixed points has raised a lot of interest. In this talk, I review the basic mechanisms for asymptotic safety together with strict no-go theorems and proofsof existence in simple, semi-simple and supersymmetric gauge theories. Opportunities for model building beyond the confines of asymptotic freedom are also indicated.
